Boots on the Road

The day has been oppressively hot! When the heat and humidity settles in, everything gets moving slowly, so we found ourselves waiting – praying and talking among ourselves and anticipating the day’s ministry. There is a small group of new Christians who come to our outreach center when they have the opportunity. Sometimes two come, other times five. They help hand out Bibles, books, DVDs and talk with people about our faith. As people filter past the outreach center, some just take Bibles and books, others engage in conversation. Even as I’m writing,
Aigul is sharing about Christ’s imminent return and expressing with certainty that her country will once again serve Jesus. She is explaining that she believes that her people have been misled about what real faith in the Messiah means, and those with whom she’s talking are becoming interested and looking in the Bible.
Jenish asked if he could take a pamphlet we have here about guilt and shame so he could study it on his own. He’s explaining it and other aspects of our faith right now to a gentleman whom I’ve never seen before.
One lady dressed in yellow and white with a tan hat and shiny mirrored sunglasses rode up on a bicycle, stopping right in front of the book table. She got off and asked for a Bible and perused the other books. She seemed to know exactly which books she wanted, quickly grabbing a couple books, hopping on her bike and riding off.
An old man stopped, and I asked him if he had a Bible. He answered that he had already gotten on at our table and he was looking to see if we had any new books.
It warms my heart to listen to these believers who have known Jesus for such a short period of time talk so intensely about our faith, sharing with those who are curious and do not know Jesus. Some days there is a lot of excitement at our center: recently we gave out 41 Bibles in one day! Other days are like today, and only a few people drift by in the languid afternoon. Either way, the Word of God is being put in the hands of men and women, significant conversations are taking place, and men and women are finding Jesus along the Silk Road.
