Anyone with experience living in Asia knows that almost every college age student wants to learn English. So as my wife and I taught English in a city in China, I was able to meet with some of my students for one-on-one tutoring. One student I met with regularly was Mike. I taught him English and he helped me with my struggling Chinese.

We met once a week on the campus grounds. We’d sit in the grass or on a bench, share some hot jiaozi (pot stickers) from a plastic bag, and begin our lessons. Eventually our conversations drifted to personal stories, our favorite pastimes and finally what we believed in. After about a month of meeting this way, I finally felt the opportunity was right to share the message of Jesus. Mike listened patiently and even asked questions as I finished. I asked him if he had ever heard of Jesus in this way before. He said he’d heard of Jesus but knew nothing of His life and messages.

We continued to meet every week, learning from each other and listening to each other, until a bond and friendship formed. When finished our year of teaching, Mike was the one to see us off at our bus to the airport back to America. Both of us were in tears knowing we may never see each other again. Mike didn’t accept the gospel that year, but what a privilege to be able to share the whole message of Jesus to even one person! Who knows when Mike will hear about Jesus again in his lifetime?

Please pray for all the college students in China, who just like students in America, are looking for a purpose and a higher meaning in life. Pray that believers will continue to seek out these students to show them the love of Christ and give them a greater purpose! Pray for Mike, that he would seek after God and remember the message of Jesus.
