Setting the Table – Somaq

“They will come from east and west, from north and south, and recline at the table in the kingdom of God.” (Luke 13:29)

The final item on our metaphorical Haft Seen table is somaq (سماق). Somaq, or sumac, is a spice used throughout the Middle East. If you like Lebanese, Arabian, or Turkish food, you have probably encountered somaq on kebabs or hummus. It’s similar to lemon juice in that it adds a natural, sour flavor to dishes.
Iranians place somaq on their Haft Seen tables, not because of its taste, but because of its bright, cherry-red color. To Persians, the sunrise color of somaq symbolizes a new dawn of good conquering evil.
Wow – what a powerful symbol! The Live|Dead Iran team also looks forward to a new dawn for Iran, when God will triumph over the darkness completely and millions of Iranians will experience true freedom in Christ. We place somaq on our table with great expectation for what God will do. Let’s join together and pray for a new dawn in Iran.
Almighty King, your glory covers the earth. No darkness is strong enough to snuff our your light, nor is any force of evil powerful enough to undermine your authority. We recognize that you are sovereign over all.
Today we pray for a new dawn in Iran. May your light overpower the darkness as your Spirit sets captives free and gives hope to the hopeless. May revival sweep through Iran at an unprecedented rate and completely transform the nation. We have heard encouraging stories of recent revival in Iran, and now we can’t wait to see what you have planned next. Holy Spirit, we join with you in intercession and expectation. Let your Kingdom come in Iran!
