One of the ways I can interact with neighbors is when Benny Majaya comes. Benny Majaya is the local name for the trash truck.

A long horn blast says Benny is near—bring your trash now or risk waiting a few days to get rid of it. We all run through our village to the main street in hopes of catching Benny before it takes off again.

It’s a bonding cultural experience. I throw my trash in then help others with theirs. Older women moving as fast as they can with heavy loads usually need help. When I can, I grab their loads and run to the truck for them. The other day a woman called me “girani mwema,” good neighbor.

We look for every way possible to endear ourselves to our friends here.
